Dry Skin Care - Tips for those With Dry Skin

Applying creamy facials at night is just one of many dry skin care regimens. However, if you are unaware of what causes dry skin, all other skin care treatments may prove to be ineffective.

Dry Skin Care 101

Dry skin is caused by a lack of sufficient water in the epidermal cells. The body's epidermal cells are made of roughly 80% keratinocytes, composed of soft protein keratin. These skin cells are born in the lowest layer of the epidermis, or the basal layer. When these skin cells rise toward the outer later, they undergo many changes, including the increase in the amount of keratin produced.

To avoid dry skin, water or moisture should be trapped in the skin, keeping the keratin healthy. Care for dry skin involves steps which restore skin moisture and suppleness to the skin. Here are some tips for caring for dry skin.

Instead of frequent baths and showers within the day, take them every other day or less. Just have a sponge bath in between on odor-causing parts of your body. Use only facial cleansers once daily, preferably before bedtime. Just splash cool water in the morning or just use a moisturizing toner and apply skin moisturizer. Frequent baths and showers, as well as overuse of facial skin cleansers are habits that strip the skin of the moisture and oil.

Rinse off soap thoroughly. Soap can leave a film that further dries the skin. Wash off all residues of soap on your skin, especially the face by rinsing from fifteen to twenty-five splashes.

Approach towels with care. Patting, instead of rubbing your skin is the proper way to dry off. Washcloths left to dry without rinsing in fabric conditioners can irritate your skin.
