WAILING IN VAIN - Barrett's case latest in failed attempts at Marley estate
"Them belly full but we hungry. A hungry mob is a angry mob. A rain a-fall but the dirt it tough; A pot a-cook but the food no 'nough." Them Belly Full (But We Hungry), Performed by Bob Marley, written by L. Cogil and Carlton Barrett.

IT IS no secret that there would have been no Diana Ross without the Supremes, no Gladys Knight without the Pips, no Lionel Richie without the Commodores and, in the same way, it's impossible to think of Bob Marley without linking him with the Wailers, whether they are Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh or the band with which he toured after the trio split.

Mortimer Planner or Mortimo Planno as he has come to be known was born in Cuba of Jamaican parents on September 6, 1920. He later moved to Jamaica with his parents and three older siblings. At some time in the late thirties or early forties, Planno came to believe that Haile Selassie I is the Living God. After adopting the Rastafari lifestyle, Planno moved to Trench Town and became one of the founding members of Kingston's first Rastafarian camp in the Dungle. From that time, Planno became one of the more charismatic adherents of Rastafari. Being intensely studious, an exceptional and eloquent orator, and harboring an abiding concern for the welfare of all Rastafari, his legacy is well known and respected worldwide among many Rastafari brethren.

In 1961, Planno was selected to be a member of the Jamaican delegation that traveled throughout Africa (Mission to Africa) to explore the possibilities of repatriation. On April 21, 1966, now known as Grounation Day (a Rastafari holy day), Planno was able becalm a wildly enthusiastic and zealous mass of 100,000 Rastafari and other believers eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of Haile Selassie I on his historic visit to Jamaica. This feat allowed the Emperor to make a more placid but still hurried de-planing to a waiting limousine. During Selassie's three day stay in Jamaica, Planno was among the selected Rastafari Elders who met with His Imperial Majesty (H.I.M.).

This latter fact and Planno's broad knowledge of and adherence to Rastafari beliefs and practices led Bob Marley, one or two years after H.I.M.'s visit, to seek Planno out and "reason" with him in Trench Town. Planno passed on his knowledge of Rastafarian principles, rites and customs to Marley who eventually became an outspoken and internationally celebrated musician and dedicated adherent of the religion.

Planno (Brother Kumi) resided in Porus and Kingston, Jamaica and later moved his residence to the University of the West Indies, Mona where he was a Fellow in folk philosophy (1997-1999). Planno also associated with the Institute of Caribbean Studies as a consultant for researchers exploring the Rastafari Movement. Planno died of respiratory failure on March 6, 2006 at University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. He remains one of the most prominent and influential voices in the Rastarfarian Movement.

High Court to resolve wrangles over reggae musician's legacy

Would Bob Marley have made it without his distinctive bouncy basslines? The question will be put to a judge this week as a protracted legal wrangle between the Marley family and the bassist in his backing band, the Wailers, finally comes to the High Court. Aston 'Family Man' Barrett is suing the Marleys and the Universal Island record label, claiming that neither he nor his deceased brother Carlton, the band's drummer, have received any royalties since Marley's death in 1981. If he is successful, Barrett, now in his sixties and father to 52 children, could receive a payout of up to £60 million.

Documentary celebrates reggae legend's legacy Documentary celebrates reggae legend's legacy

NINE MILE, Jamaica - In the unspoiled countryside where the remains of Jamaica's most famous son lie inside a marble crypt, children's voices wail the words of Bob Marley's legendary lyrics as curious visitors search for the secret to his prophetic wisdom. Marley, the legendary reggae maestro who died of cancer in Miami 25 years ago, continues to be bigger in death than in life. That is true both in Jamaica, where his birthplace has become a shrine, and in his adopted home of Miami, where his mother and most of his 11 children still live. He is the subject of lectures and books, festivals and films - there is even a Marley-themed store on Miami's South Beach.
